Painter · Jan Juc, Victoria, Australia
James Mulcahy is a Fine Arts graduate and carpenter based in Jan Juc along the Great Ocean Road. He works between site and studio, moving between construction environments and the coastal landscape that surrounds his home.
His painting practice draws on direct observation of the Victorian coastline as well as found and remembered imagery. Working across small vignettes and larger compositions, Mulcahy reduces each scene to its essential structure, light, form and atmosphere, allowing the emotional presence of place to emerge.
Rather than describing specific narratives or documenting everyday scenes, his work is concerned with distilling the feeling of place as it is encountered, remembered, or passed through. These paintings hold a sense of pause and transition, where landscape becomes a record of attention, memory and atmosphere.
Alongside his plein air practice, Mulcahy also works from found photographic material, including images discovered while working at an auction house several years ago. These photographs, often anonymous and carrying traces of personal and historical memory, have become an important point of departure within his studio practice.
